One of the main objectives of the off-season for the Super Bowl LIV Champions Kansas City Chiefs was to extend their franchise quarterback Patrick Mahomes. And on July 6th, 2020, they did just that. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Patrick Mahomes has a signed a 10yr, $400 million dollar contract, not only making this the largest contract in the history of the National Football League, but in sports history in general. Before this historic contract, Mahomes’s previous contract had two years with nearly $28 million left on the deal until he was a free agent in 2021.

Patrick Mahomes is more than well-deserving of this contract. He is currently 24 years old, and the young quarterback has already put up mind-boggling numbers. In the past 2 seasons, including the playoffs, Mahomes ranked first in pass touchdowns (89), passing yards (10,602), wins (27), and total QBR (79). And let’s not forget, he also was named the Super Bowl MVP of Super Bowl LIV in which he threw for 286 yards and 3 total touchdowns against the San Francisco 49ers. Mahomes, since being drafted in 2017 has already thrown for over 9000 career passing yards and nearly 80 touchdowns. This historic contract is guaranteed through 2031, meaning that he will be 35 once his contract is up.
The Kansas City Chiefs have had a successful offseason thus far. Notably, they signed defensive end Taco Charlton to a one-year deal through 2020 and drafted LSU running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire with the 32nd pick in the 2020 NFL draft. The Chiefs have also been able to retain 20 of the 22 starters from the Super Bowl LIV championship team as well according to Charles Goldman from USA Today. Extending Mahomes was simply the icing on the cake. This ten-year contract extension for Patrick Mahomes solidifies and proves that the Chiefs will be a force to be reckoned with for years to come.
